Pharmaceutical Advice
OTITIS EXTERNA
A patient with otitis externa who is diagnosed and under treatment usually shows improvement in his/her clinical condition within 48-72 hours of starting the treatment.
Pharmaceutical advice plays an important role in the success of treatment and in preventing future infections1
Correct application of ear drops
The user should tilt the head towards the opposite shoulder to the infected ear, perform traction upwards and backwards the pinna, and apply the prescribed ear drops (in young children, the earlobe should be pulled downwards). Alternatively, you can do this lying down, with the affected ear facing upwards. The procedure is made easier if the ear drops are placed by someone else. A position of the head should be maintained for around 3 to 5 minutes, gently massaging the auricular pavilion (ear).
Non-pharmacological measures
It is advisable to keep the ear dry by avoiding exposure to water during treatment. As long as there is no pain and exudate, the use of protective earplugs may be considered. If there is pain and exudate, hearing aids and in-ear headphones, as well as manipulation of the canal, should be avoided.
Prevention
Prevention of relapses is based on avoiding risk factors.
- Avoid water entering the ears by using earplugs (make sure they are regularly disinfected and properly maintained);
- Avoid manipulating the ear canal for ineffective pseudo-cleaning or scratching the itch;
- Avoid shampoos and hair colourants to enter the ear;
- Remove hearing aids and keep good hygiene and care of the ear.
